Illustration: Squid Attack

I needed to give this guy a reason to abandon ship. Generally speaking, a giant squid attack is an excellent reason to do just that.

Magazine Design: FLIBS Happening

I think my editors were trying to set the record for most photos on a spread with this one. Thanks to the miracle of path cutting, I was able to oblige.

Magazine Design: Dayworker Survivor

I was never a big fan of the title chosen for this feature, but the general idea of it was that five women of various skill level and personality all had to vie for the same position. Only one would survive. Though my editors see it as only one, this opening spread is comprised of no less than five custom illustrations! Had I more time, I would have loved to develop it further, but time is always of the essence and a deadline always looms in publishing.

Magazine Design: Drinking Responsibly

The sole reason I've included this feature’s design here is because I like the olive I placed in the "Y"/martini glass in the title. Typography is fun.

Magazine Design: Bottle Battle Feature

I had no art for this feature about the reliance that yachts have on bottled water. So I found myself one picture of a bottle and one picture of a yacht and then combined them for a nice ship-in-the-bottle effect.

Illustration: Retiring Broke

I drew this for a "Last Laugh" column which discussed the state of the average crew member when they retire.

Illustration: Cursed!

This illustration accompanied a column that told the tale of a cursed BBQ.

Magazine Design: September Cover

I haven't posted one of my covers in forever. This one is for the big September issue.

Illustration: Work Out Day

I think this illustration best reflects my views on exercising.

Illustration: Give Peace A Chance

In this illustration, a call for peace is made during a food fight.

Illustration: Man with Mutant Fish

There was a lot going on in this column.... Believe it or not, the illustration actually captured most of it. On a personal note, any time I can pay homage to Blinky the Fish from "The Simpson's" I am happy.

Illustration: Chef Frenzy

Here we have a nice illustration I did for an article where the chef was up against the clock getting dinner prepared for the charter guests.

Illustration: Educating the Owner

This illustration was done for a recent feature we ran on the difficulties that arise when yacht crew attempt to train yacht owners about their boats.

Magazine Design: November Cover

A fine photo of the crew for the November issue of Dockwalk. Don't know about that helicopter silhouette on the hull, though....

Ad: Boys and Girls Club Rendezvous

I have done a lot of work for the Boys and Girls Clubs. Shown below is an ad I did for their annual Rendezvous event.

Ad: IGY

In addition to magazine layout and illustration, I also spend a lot of time doing advertisements. Below is a double page spread I recently did for a IGY Marinas.

Magazine Design: April Cover

April turned out to be one of my most successful cover designs yet. And best of all? I finished it early.

Illustration: Secret Society of Yacht Chefs

This illustration of the "Secret Society of Yacht Chefs" was a lot of fun for me. I liked incorporating elements of the chef uniform into the robes.

Magazine Redesign: March Cover

At the end of December, I was informed that the magazine I work on, Dockwalk, needed to be redesigned. By February. It was a daunting task, but I'm proud to say I pulled it off. This is my cover for the first redesigned issue.

Magazine Redesign: Happening

The first of the redesigned "Happenings" sections for Dockwalk. Part of the reason for the redesign was that we changed printers, forcing the book to be smaller. This added to my challenge, as I was still expected to get all of the usual information into the magazine despite the new dimensions.

Magazine Redesign: Webcurrents

The "Webcurrents" section of the magazine is meant to inform the reader about what is going down on our website. I tried to make this part of the book as sleek and "techy" as possible, while still maintaining the visual consistency of the redesign.

Magazine Redesign: New Launch

The redesigned "New Launch."

Magazine Redesign: Safety Feature

This was the first feature done in the redesigned style. New fonts and an increased reliance on path cutting are making a big difference for me. Now if only I could get the editors to cut down on some of the text!

Magazine Redesign: Clean Power Feature

I could find no appropriate art for the opening page of this feature about new forms of energy generation aboard a yacht. So I had to get typographic on it!

Magazine Redesign: News and Gear

This is an example page from "News & Gear," which is housed in a section of the book called "Captain's Log." It is an editorial decree that "Captain's Log" be set off visually from other parts of the magazine. That is why the colors turn to gold and black here in this part of the book.

Magazine/Illustration Redesign: Dishing It Up

For the redesign on "Dishing It Up," I wanted to change not only the design, but also my illustrative style. The problem was that I rather liked the way she looked before, so I simply limited my color palette and added thin ink outlines to her figure.

Magazine Redesign: Final Touch

The newly redesigned "Final Touch" relies now on isolated images and as much white space as is humanly possible. In the past, Dockwalk's design was fairly busy. One of the things I most delighted in with the redesign was being able to finally let things breathe a little bit!

Magazine Redesign: Inside Story

This column, in and of itself, may not be the most impressive thing I've ever done. However, it is the first of the redesigned pieces in the magazine. I worked feverishly for two weeks to get the fonts, signals, folios, paragraph styles, etc. just right. I can't describe how nice it was to see it all finally come together in a cohesive design.

Magazine Design: Downtime

Each month, we suggest a place our readers might want to visit. This month's pick was Bangkok. Strong photography made the path cutting well worth my time.

Magazine Design/Illustration: Love for the Bread

This "Dishing It Up" spread tells the tale of how our roaming chef learned to make authentic Jamaican Coconut Bread.
